L’HTA è un approccio multidimensionale e multidisciplinare per l’analisi delle implicazioni cliniche, assistenziali, sociali, organizzative, economiche, etiche e legali di una tecnologia sanitaria (apparecchiature biomedicali, dispositivi medici, farmaci, procedure cliniche, software, modelli organizzativi, programmi di prevenzione e promozione della salute), attraverso la valutazione di più dimensioni quali l’efficacia, la sicurezza, i costi, l’impatto sociale e organizzativo.

L’obiettivo dell’HTA è valutare gli effetti reali e/o potenziali della tecnologia, sia a priori sia durante l’intero ciclo di vita, nonché le conseguenze che l’introduzione o l’esclusione di un intervento hanno per il sistema sanitario, l’economia e la società.
