David Sackett: dall’epidemiologia clinica all’EbM

È morto il 13 maggio David Sackett, uno dei principali esponenti dell’Evidence-based Medicine, primo Chair della Cochrane Collaboration. Nel 1967 aveva fondato il primo Dipartimento di Epidemiologia e Biostatistica al mondo e nel 1994 il Centre for EBM di Oxford.

A pochi giorni dalla scomparsa sono in tanti a ricordarlo a cominciare da Iain Chalmers (uno dei fondatori della Cochrane Collaboration), che in un tweet scrive: “David Sackett has died, No-one has done more to promote the use of research evidence in clinical practice. Respect!”. Come evidenzia la notizia pubblicata sul sito dell’Associazione Alessandro Liberati, Network Italiano Cochrane, Sackett è stato uno dei “costruttori” della Epidemiologia clinica e della medicina basata sull’evidenza, sempre pronto a rinnovarsi, come sottolineano, tra gli altri, Richard Smith, sul BMJ e un post sul blog dottprof.

Per il Canadian Medical Association Journal, e molti altri, Sackett è il padre della Evidence.based Medicine, “un gigante tra i giganti”, che riuscì a rendere la ricerca clinica “un gioco di squadra,” come dice l’attuale direttore del Cochrane Canada, Jeremy Grimshaw, e “ha cambiato in meglio la qualità della ricerca medica e la pratica clinica”.
